Magma Fest Preview 3/1: Gift uh Gab, Raz Simone, The Numbs, WD4D, PUNISHMENT "TV", Ian Ostrowski, and DJ Assist from Thad Wenatchee!

LET IT BEGIN
It has arrived! The opening ceremonies for the 6th annual Magma Festival will take place this Friday, March 1, 2013 at 8:00pm. We've got a damn fine party planned for you with a variety of beat-oriented music to take you all through the night. The theme is Summer in Seattle in Winter. Nostalgia for that 6 week window of sunshine and lake swimming bliss. We'll bring the chips, you bring the dip!
Speaking of youthful, get to Hollow Earth Radio early (like 8 THIRTY) because 15 year old Ian Ostrowski, a Sunday Hollow Earth Radio DJ, will be opening the evening. Ian is in the rock band Deception Pass, but this will be his first foray into live beat-based music. His album 'The Fire' (recently self-released on bandcamp) was a year-end favorite at the station. Check out this hella twin peaks sounding number, Tranquilo!
Says Ian on Twitter:
Yep! Raz Simone is a frequent collaborator with Sam Lachow (see 'Young Seattle' video) but is also a powerful solo performer. We recently added Raz to the bill after Kung Foo Grip had to cancel, and we're excited to see what he will bring.
To mix it up, we've got sets planned from experimental electronic artist The Numbs described by Dave Segal from the Stranger as:
"Black Dice-ian, sinister/tropical headuckery—rock refracted through several fun-house mirrors and slipped a magic-mushroom Slurpee"
And crowd favorite PUNISHMENT will be performing an installation entitled 'Punishment TV", which includes William's fun-loving party music layered with pre-recorded solo performances from Andrew Swanson, Zach Burba, etc. all played off a vhs tape. Here's a behind the scenes look of the project:
Helping out with the DJ assist will be local genius WD4D and 'Hollow Head' DJ Thad Wenatchee.
BRING SOME DIP. Seriously, we'll have chips.

Signal to Noise: Imagined Frequencies of Radiophonic Space

Signal to Noise: Imagined Frequencies of Radiophonic Space
Check out this installation by Amber Cortes happening at Jack Straw! WE APPROVE!!!

"Radio is a forward moving medium that collects, controls, and radiates information. On the FM dial, radio is a highly regulated and monetized space. But on other dials, the all but forgotten AM and shortwave, illegal pirate radio stations, and citizen band frequencies, it is a different animal entirely. Imagine a space where all broadcasts are possible along a "radiophonic continuum," where voices and sounds mingle with spontaneous white noise, existing away from time and place, separate and uncontrolled and triumphant in their ephemeral power. This is the magic of radio. 4 imagined radio stations - incorporating audio from KRAB Radio's archives, pirate radio broadcasts, and other sources - will be transmitted from four different radios, each station a testament to how freeform radio space can be reimagined, re-purposed, and revitalized. Jack Straw resident artist Amber Cortes is a media producer and sound artist living in Seattle. She is currently attending the Master of Communication in Digital Media (MCDM) program at the University of Washington. Some of her radio pieces and work can be found at www.youneverknowradio.com.
January 25 - March 8, 2013 with an artist talk tonight, Friday, February 15, 7pm Jack Straw New Media Gallery 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, Seattle

My Career as a Jerk Filmmaker David Markey on The Shit Show w Jaybo Feb 12th
Posted By Jaybo on 02/12/2013 at 07:09AM
David Markey of We Got Power FIlms is responsible for such "must see" independent releases such as 1991 The Year Punk Broke and Dinosaur JR-BUG Live at the 930 Club.
I, Jaybo, have been a massive fan of his films before i knew his name. We will talk about what drives him to make the movies he makes as well as play some punk tracks that weave themselves through his movies. It should be a helluva good time. Wont you join us?
The Shit Show w Jaybo airs this week (Tuesday Feb 12th) from 11 to 1pm
