Hollow Earth Radio’s Magma Festival
Curated By Bad For Jazz + Table & Chairs March 24, 2012 @ 7pm Chapel Performance Space Sliding scale donations
Hollow Earth Radio’s annual March-long Magma Festival has selected the improvisational happening organization Bad For Jazz and local out-jazz record label Table & Chairs to curate their slant on Seattle’s underground jazz offerings. Tonight’s event will feature four diverse performances by just a fraction of Seattle’s young and seasoned jazz interpreters. Aside from this unique grouping of performers, all artists are expected to improvise their sets, making this a one-of-a-kind happening not to brush off the radar of must-attend shows. Performance lineup as follows:
KING TEARS BAT TRIP – This rhythm-dynamic big beat septet consists of 5 drummers, 1 guitarist, and 1 saxophonist. Their tribal anxiety is iced-over w/ melodic near noise-toned guitar and bemoaning sax that shifts hinted themes into far off/far out improvisational breakdowns. This date will also see the digital release of their new album on band member Luke Bergman’s Table & Chairs Records. www.tableandchairsmusic.com
FIGEATER - Disjointed, amok-running, yet weaving explorations of innate genre fusing by multi- instrumentalist/vocalist Beth Fleenor. This quartet’s songlike psychedelic freakout episodes unsnap for punctuated improvisations that re-button into sonic spelunking. www.thefrankagency.org
WA– Sometimes a duo helmed by the breakneck guitarist/saxophonist Simon Henneman and percussionist Greg Klepligner. Sometimes a quartet w/ note annulling guitarist CJ Stout and the tonality totality of bicycle-playing/electronic artist Sean Lane. Always a lock on eureka performances, no matter the lineup. These veteran jazz chancers streamline sharp updates to 1960’s Impulse New-Thing into the duct of ever-inventiveness. http://www.tableandchairsmusic.com/artists/wa
T’TH & HARE – This ex Unfair Parents duo will be debuting what can only be expected to be flat out hyper noise jazz. The only reference can (ahem, will) mention is that the instrumentation will consist of Billy Safarik (formerly of MOUNTAINSS to boot) alternating between fleeting saxophone and guitar with drummer/trombonist Aaron Weinberg as the anchor. This evening’s wildcard indeed. (no link on purpose)
