I was really excited to see the new Evon CD come into the Hollow Earth studios the other day, courtesy of purveyors of fine experimental music, Aphonia Recordings.
Evon is Agnes Szelag, a sound artist and performer currently based in Poland. She was in experimental duo Myrmyr with Marielle Jakobsins, who were also consistently putting out lovely and challenging sounds.
Evon's The Bees Are Coming is intricate, smart, and accessible abstract music, much like Julia Holter's recent releases. Like Holter, there are haunting, eerie vocals yet complex structure and arrangements.
Speaking of Myrmyr, Marielle Jakobsons also has a new album called "Glass Canyons" out under her own name. Like Evon, it is bristling with brilliance. Even Tiny Mix Tapes has taken notice and featured her new album on their Eureka! blog, which is high praise, because the folks there have really excellent taste.
